Physical Hunger vs. Emotional Hunger: Keys to Trusting Your Signals Again

No one is born disconnected from their own body. If you observe a baby or a young girl, you will notice that she knows perfectly well when she is hungry and when she is satisfied. She intuitively knows when she needs to rest and when she needs to move. However, as the years go by, we begin to fill ourselves with external rules, opinions, comparisons, and diets. Little by little, we start trusting what others say about our bodies more than what our bodies are trying to tell us, until one day we stop listening to them altogether.

One of the most common effects of this disconnection is the difficulty in distinguishing between physical hunger and emotional hunger. Eating out of boredom, stress, fatigue, or on autopilot can leave us feeling like we’ve lost our way.

How can you start telling them apart and regain trust in your body's internal regulation? Here are three essential keys:

**Speed of onset:** Physical hunger comes on gradually and progressively; it can wait. Emotional hunger strikes suddenly and urgently, demanding immediate gratification.

**Type of food:** When you are truly hungry, any balanced meal will satisfy you (a proper meal containing protein, healthy fats, and carbohydrates). Emotional hunger tends to be very specific: it craves crunchy textures, sugars, or very particular combinations to numb an emotion.

**How you feel afterward:** Physical hunger leads to a comfortable sense of fullness and energy. Emotional hunger often ends in guilt, heaviness, or the feeling that you ate on autopilot.

The goal of identifying these signals isn't to control yourself or forbid eating when you feel emotional hunger. The goal is to turn on the light of awareness so you can choose what you need in that moment with kindness and calm, rather than acting out of automatic reaction.

Reconnecting with your body is a lifelong tool. If you want to learn to identify your true hunger signals, understand why the connection to satiety gets lost, and regain trust in your internal regulation, I invite you to join the "Real Hunger Signals: Learn to Listen to Your Body" workshop at the *Escuela Hambre de Mujer*.
